New Rotary president conducts first meeting
Thursday's meeting of the Carmi Rotary Club was the first meeting of the new Rotary year, Hubel and JR made his first meeting as club president.
JR has been a Rotarian for the past years, and manages to work in the Rotary office around his farm life very busy.
Cindy Conley will remain the club treasurer for the New Year, and Past President, Tom Logan, moves into the role of club secretary.
At the meeting, Cindy Conley became the impromptu speaker, as she says the club on a recent trip to Shreveport, Louisiana
Cindy says she made the trip to Louisiana to attend the wedding of the daughter of a close friend. She told the club that the marriage took place in a real store more than 100 years, in general, and the wedding was able to enjoy traditional dishes from bayou, such as okra, oatmeal, black beans and rice and even crayfish.
Overall, Cindy said she was not too impressed with Shreveport, and was actually very surprised to see the amount of play is going on in the region. She said that there are casinos everywhere, from giant clubs, small rooms "diner" in size.
While in the area, Cindy was able to visit some museums and first-rate art galleries. A gallery, Norton, presented a unique piece with more than $ 100 million of art. Prominent in the gallery were many works of Norton Frederick Remington and cowboy artist Charles Russell.
Cindy also learned on his trip that Shreveport was named after Colonel Shreve, who lived in the area in the 1830s. At that time, the Red River was so jammed with debris and logs that no river traffic could get to the little colony. Colonel Shreve designed for the withdrawal of newspapers, the opening of the river traffic as necessary.To thank him for his efforts, local people named the city in his honor - Shreveport.
Peters and Dale Morris McCall gave the club a short Habitat for Humanity updated following the submission of Cindy, noting many businesses and local residents who went beyond their support at home.
